What MaternAlert is

MaternAlert is a digital health platform designed to support maternal healthcare delivery in Nigeria. It provides tools for health workers and pregnant women including digital antenatal care records, blood pressure trend tracking, risk flagging, defaulter identification, appointment management, and health education.

MaternAlert is built as a clinical decision-support and healthcare operations tool. It is intended to assist qualified healthcare professionals in organising and monitoring patient information — not to replace their clinical judgment.

What MaternAlert is not

• MaternAlert is not a medical device as defined under Nigerian, UK, US, or EU medical device regulations.
• MaternAlert does not diagnose any medical condition, including hypertension, preeclampsia, eclampsia, or any pregnancy complication.
• MaternAlert does not prescribe or recommend treatments of any kind.
• MaternAlert does not replace a qualified healthcare professional, doctor, nurse, midwife, or clinical assessment.
• MaternAlert does not constitute medical advice of any kind to patients or healthcare workers.

Clinical decision responsibility

All clinical decisions — including but not limited to diagnosis, treatment, referral, medication, and discharge — remain entirely the responsibility of the attending qualified healthcare professional. MaternAlert's risk flags, monitoring states, and alerts are decision-support outputs based on structured rules derived from published clinical guidelines. They are not diagnoses and should never be acted upon without clinical assessment.

Accuracy and limitations

While MaternAlert is built in collaboration with registered healthcare professionals and follows published guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO), the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), and other recognised bodies, we make no warranty that:

• The platform is free from errors or technical failures
• Risk assessments generated are clinically complete or appropriate for every individual patient
• Content reflects the most current clinical guidelines at all times
• The platform functions correctly in all network or device conditions

Users of the platform — whether healthcare workers or patients — should exercise independent clinical and personal judgment at all times.

Patient use

If you are a pregnant woman using the MaternAlert patient application, please note that the information provided through the app is educational and supportive in nature. It is not a substitute for regular antenatal care visits with a qualified health worker. Always attend your scheduled ANC appointments and report any concerning symptoms to your healthcare provider promptly.

If you feel unwell, do not wait for an app notification. Seek care immediately.

Emergency situations

MaternAlert's emergency alert feature is designed to assist in notifying emergency contacts and healthcare facilities — it is not a substitute for calling emergency services or physically going to a health facility. In any obstetric emergency, the priority is getting to a qualified healthcare provider as quickly as possible.

No provider-patient relationship

Use of MaternAlert does not create a doctor-patient relationship, nurse-patient relationship, or any other professional healthcare relationship between the user and MaternAlert, its founders, employees, contractors, or partners.

Regulatory status

MaternAlert operates as a digital health software platform. It is not currently registered as a medical device with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) or any other regulatory authority. Users should be aware of this status.
